My interests lie at the intersection of engineering and the arts. I am comfortable with heavy power tools, a fine point soldering iron and programming IDEs and SDKs.
ENGINEERING CONSULTANT, LUTHER THIE; OAKLAND, CA — 2009-2011
Worked with Oakland artist Luther Thie to design and develop electronic and mechanical backends for a variety of interactive sculpture projects, including the LA Interchange shown at Oakland ProArts and the Precipice commission for UC Berkeley’s Center for New Media.
PHYSICS SHOP TECH, CCSF; SAN FRANCISCO, CA — 2009
Designed and built equipment for a color mixing lab and an interactive Gaussian distribution hallway display. With a full wood and metal shop, I was responsible for repairing and maintaining equipment for 10 different CCSF Physics course labs including kinematics, electromagnetism and modern physics.
ENGINEERING INTERN, NEXTBUS; ALAMEDA, CA — 2008
Prototyped the next generation of bus stop kiosk sign. Worked with an ARM single board computer running Linux connected to existing infrastructure by cellular modem. Evaluated and specified text-to-speech software to run on the SBC which I interfaced with waterproof street hardware to provide speaking bus predictions at bus stops.
ENGINEER/SCIENTIST I, APPLE; CUPERTINO, CA — 2000-2005
Testing lead for the iMac CPU software department. Designed and ran test cases for OS 9 through OS X 10.4 on all the consumer level desktop computers from the G3 iMac through the G5 iMac. Worked with engineers from many different departments to resolve hundreds of bugs.
PIRATE RADIO STATION OWNER, KSRF; SONOMA COUNTY, CA — 1999
Built a 1 watt PLL transmitter, 25 watt amplifier, RF filters, antennas, studio audio gear and operated a low power, FM radio station. An incredible community building experience that ended when the FCC showed up.
Designed and built a large, modular grid of 4096 LEDs controlled by a custom designed FPGA backend. Wrote custom Java software to display full motion video on the LED panels. Designed and had fabricated surface mount PCBs and connecting hardware. [project link]
A 9HP gas engine, a custom designed and machined spool, welded steel frame, 1000’ of line with a wakeboarding handle attached to the end, allowing friends and I to wakeboard on any body of water, without a boat. [video link]
TOWERS OF HANOI
Repurposed and reprogrammed a 6-axis medical robot arm to continuously move 51 disks between 3 pegs in accordance with the classic Towers of Hanoi puzzle. Built a jig to quickly machine 51 disks decreasing in radius by 1/16” [project link]
